Casco Bay High School Students Investigate Evolution at the Duboise Lab

Students from Casco Bay High School in Portland visited the Duboise Virology Lab at the University of Southern Maine to investigate how molecular biology methods can be used to establish evolutionary relationships between organisms.  While at USM, students participated in a lab session analyzing genomic DNA with gel electrophoresis and used the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) from the National Center for Biotechnology Information to construct phylogenies of organisms by comparing gene sequences.  Science teachers from CBHS, Anne Loughlin and Brooke Teller, planned the visit as part of an intensive class exploring evolution.  Casco Bay High School is public Expeditionary Learning high school in Portland, Maine. CBHS is one of the top performing high schools in the state in STEM subjects.
